Just so y'all are aware, Cotic just announced this sucker: http://www.cotic.co.uk/product/escapade#new

I am pretty stoked on this, just waiting to see what Fairlight announces whenever they get around to it. Not sure why all of the bikes I prefer come out of the UK rather than local, but it is what it is.

Those colors...

Smileteam ST-F119 (chinese carbon frame)

Hello folks,
I never really do any reviews or anything like this, but I feel like I've been an information leach over the years, and it was time to give back. I got some good knowledge from the Carbonda thread, but since this is not a Carbonda, I figured I'd start its own.

Firstly the main purpose for which I chose this bike: I wanted a do-it-all bike that I could take with when I go visit my family in Italy once or twice a year. There's all kinds of riding there: mountains, flats, gravel, road, dirt, you name it. And since I can only bring one bike, something like this would be my best bet. An Open UP would have been amazing, but I had a much lower budget for this, as I might even end up leaving it there. So I figured... what better part to skimp on than the least important one?? So I started researching the Chinese frame route.

There were other middle ground options like some nice steel framesets, but I couldn't find any with 650B x 2.1" clearance. I may not need such a wide tire, but there's definitely a lot more rubber options when you go up to 2.1". Plus I thought this frame looked really cool, it is essentially this  http://meritbikes.com/en/gravel-plus/
Other brands/models that you may find this under are:

Workswell WCB-R-125
Faraoll GF-001
Tideace FM-CX072

There were slightly variations between all these (BB shell size, and frame bosses locations mostly), I am sure they are all made in the same factory though.

Even Smile Team had two different versions listed of this, I ordered the one with less bosses on the frame, but I received the one with more. I kind of expected it be honest, I figured that was the most updated version and probably what I'd get, no big deal really.

I ordered mine through Aliexpress, and I must say the process was super easy and quick.
No lengthy sign up procedures, and I felt like I was pretty protected if something went south.
I got it in plain matte black, no fancy custom colors, and the delivery time was outstanding. I placed the order on Jan 30th, bike shipped on the 2nd I think, arrived to the States (San Fran) on the 7th and delivered to my work near Chicago on the 9th. Mailman even made a second trip to my office in the middle of a snowstorm. Who ever said USPS was slow??

Anyway, I got home and I unpacked it, here are some pics:

29er vs CX bike with data

$

Hi there,

i have been wanting to let go some of my bikes and now after some testing i am selling my CX bike.

I have just done 2 different rides with data,

1. along a rough cycle track with some muddy parts, tarmac, and some smooth hard pack canal path. 12 miles.

Both bikes had WTB Nano's 700 x 40c

2. All on road, including a 3 mile climb with some very steep parts.

Both bikes with Vittoria Voyager Hyper's 700 x 35c (37mm wide)

Both rides were done February in the UK, so very wet and cold.

I rode at about 70% - 80% of my maximum power, on average, a fast cruise.

THE BIKES:

2013 Voodoo Bizango MTB hard tail. 14kg. With the tyres used in the test, the bike weight would be getting close to 13.2kg. Flat pedals. BAR ENDS, Tioga power stud 6.

2014 Boardman CX Team. 9.6kg. With Shimano MT35 wheel set which is 400g's lighter than the stock Mavic xm319's.

SPD pedals.

THE DATA:

CANAL PATH muddy in places, HARD PACK, KNARLY BUMPY CYCLE TRACK.

I had the WTB NANO's at 39psi R and 37 psi F.

A little hard for the conditions, not as much float as i'd like normally, but this gave good speed on the smoother parts.

ROAD RIDE

The Vittoria Voyager Hypers were at 80psi R/F, as they are 37mm wide, it would be roughly the same as 32mm tyres at 95psi.

WHAT IT FELT LIKE

CANAL/KNARLY CYCLE TRACK

Going from the CX to the 29er with its much wider bars and excellent Tioga bar ends, i felt so much more secure, so much more leverage.

The Suntour SR fork soaked up most of the bumps. And as most of the conditions were (typical British winter conditions) wet, muddy, mossy tarmac surfaces having the extra control inspired confidence to push harder with the 29er.

I had more fun on the 29er for sure.

On the CX bike, it was fun too, but with the front end jumping around a bit more, i had to choose my lines more.

Not surprised at all that the 29er was a lot faster.

ROAD RIDE

Over all the CX was a little more comfortable with its various hand positions. But the 29er with bar ends was ok, no problem. Maybe a really long road ride i'd want the CX bike, but i don't like being on roads with cars that much. I did 6 years as a cycle courier, done my time with traffic.

At 2% slower the 29er is close enough to the CX for me to sell the CX.

And the CX has lighter wheels, is 3.5kg lighter and has SPD's.

I think if the 29er had these, the times would be almost identical.

CONCLUSION:

I am 50 years old. When i was in my prime as a courier riding all day long 25 years ago i may have got more out of the CX bike at the higher speeds, thats a guess.

The test has proven to me, what i thought, that with the same tyres and with bar ends to get more aero, a MTB or hybrid can keep up with road style bikes.

But a CX just can't keep up with a hardtail on rough surfaces.

And of course the CX would get blown away on proper single track.

I am now going to sell the CX bike.

I'm going to have 4 sets of tyres for the Voodoo Bizango.

3.0 front (rigid fork) and 2.4 rear (the most clearance allows)mtb tyres for mud and mountains.

Thunder Burts or Panaracer 42mm Gravel kings or 40mm Nano's for gravel.

2.35 Schwalbe G-one speeds front and rear for hard pack and road. These tyres have the same rolling resistance as fast 25mm road tyres.

and

40mm Voyager hypers for tarmac touring.

I am quite amazed at the Voodoo Bizango. I bought it for £280 on Ebay. Highly recommended.

Getting back into biking, and am looking at 2 bikes in my budget. Also know I would like steel. Looking at the Jamis Renegade Exploit or the Norco Search xr 105. I will hopefully get to ride them in the near future. What everI get will probably see alot of pavement as well as gravel and dirt. I'm about to turn 65 and own an aluminium Felt f85 now. I doubt I would be racing, and am in Minnesota. Any thoughts would be helpful, thanks.

All-City Gorilla Monsoon steel "monster cross” bike with clearance for 27.5 x 2.4″ tires

Great new All-City Gorilla Monsoon steel "monster cross” bike with clearance for 27.5 x 2.4″ tires:

I love these specs and geometry. The big head scratcher is why the straight 1-1/8" headtube. QBP announced another new steel bike, the Surly Midnight Special "all-road" bike with a 44mm headtube. The ability to run a tapered fork in the future would have been nice.

In the Market 1.5k Budget

Hello,

I just joined the forum and starting yet another bike hunt post...sorry.

I am looking for a ~$1500 GG for the mountains of WNC. It will be used a mix of road and fire road mountain climbing and descending. I currently have a full carbon road bike and am missing out on all the great gravel around here.

So I am primarily a mountain biker, pretty good fitness with 20+ years of riding trail (and road in bad weather). I also wrench myself so have no problem building up a frame if possible in the budget.

Because of all the climbing I don't want a tank so I am likly looking at aluminum (or higher end steel) for sure. I am not sure carbon is in the budget.

I am newer to this market and have been looking at:
Raleigh Tamland, Willard, or Roker (corporate discount)
Diamondback Haanjo (corporate discount)
Fuji Jari (the 1.3 has great specs but around 1699. anything out there less with similar specs?)
Frame options (prefer threaded BB)???

Thanks for any advice!

Educate me on Surly ride quality

So, Surly released the Midnight Special:

https://surlybikes.com/bikes/midnight_special

https://surlybikes.com/blog/road_plus_brought_to_you_by_the_midnight_special

https://www.bikerumor.com/2018/02/17/surly-midnight-special-rides-in-on-road-plus-and-modern-standards/

Now, they list it as "pavement", but with those tires I see no reason it won't handle gravel quite well also.

I am after a bike that will likely see most of it's miles on pavement, but many of my rides will get me to some sweet singletrack or gravel roads, and I want to be able to take them more comfortably.

So, I don't know much about the ride quality Surly frames offer. I love steel, but I know you can overdo it and make steel too stiff, or too flexy, although I have never experience too much flex myself.

My issue, is this could be too stiff, and I know it is unlikely anyone has ridden one, but what is the general consensus on how Surly's ride? They have been doing this long enough that I would imagine they have goals for how their bikes feel.

And I know this one has geometry closer to a road bike, and that is exactly what I want. I have never ridden a bike that was too twitchy, but I have ridden ones that had unnecessary stability, so I am not overly concerned on that end.

I would be buying a frame and building it up with parts I already have, so the complete bike spec doesn't matter in this case.

Any thoughts?

Email back from  Giant asking if the ST  measurements are correct.

Quote:

Hi Joe

Thank you for contacting us. The seat tube measurements listed for the 2018 AnyRoad Advanced 1 are correct. The near 2” difference in just the seat tube measurement severely changes the overall geometry of this bike. By significantly upgrading the frame material, from CoMax Composite to Advanced Composite, the AnyRoad frame was redesigned for optimum performance. The 2018 AnyRoad Advanced is a completely different bike from its 2017 CoMax counterpart.

The use of Advanced Composite for the 2018 AnyRoad has allowed fine tuning for best-in-class power transfer and comfort, while shedding overall weight. We hope you are able to locate a dealer nearby with an AnyRoad Advanced in stock to test ride.

Kind Regards,

Aero gravel/cyclocross/road multipurpose mission

$

0
This is my first time posting.

I have just sold my two road bikes as i usually ride triathlons and have a TT bike now. But I want to try cyclocross and have a versile bike for commuting to replace my hybrid, plus the ability to swap in some aero wheels for some serious road sportive use. I am hoping to build a single bike for this purpose.

I must say I have been tempted by a few of the Chinese carbon frames. The 3T exploro copy by tidace and the carbonda.

I have seen two extensive threads on both of these frames and they seem to be very well received.

My main questions are:

1. Am I crazy to try and make an all in one jack of all trades and master of none bike? Or will these frames be sufficiently aero and suitable for 100k road rides and thrashing around in the mud?

2. Is the 3T exploro copy too wide under the forks to run 25c or 28c on an aero road wheel (will it look stupid)

3. Would the carbonda look a bit more ‘road like’ and is it aero enough?

I’m quite excited about the prospect of speccing up my own custom paint job. And I am planning on going 1x50t at the front and 11-42 rear cassette with an XT Di2 rear mech. With some aero handlebars.

Probably three sets of wheels

Commuting, cyclocross and aero road.

I would welcome any advice regarding the choice of frames? Am I missing any aero frames that are suitable for cyclocross. Maybe more aero road frames that have the necessary wheel tyre clearance but are strong enough for gravel/cyclocross.

Narrowed Down...2 choices

Based on fit/stack reach, I am going to go with a Fuji Jari for my gravel ride.

So for those who care to chime in...is the Jari 1.3 ($1499) worth $400 more than the Jari 1.7 ($1099)?

The frames/fork are the same so here are the differences between the 2:

Model:         1.3                         1.7
group:        105 11sp                 Tiagra 10sp
Wheels:      stans grail s1           WTB sx19
Brakes:       TRP HY/RD              Tektro Lyra

So the cockpit, cranks, BB etc. are relatively the same so the major differences are listed above. Are the 3 items worth $400 more dollars? I guess I don't care about 10 vs 11 speeds that much but is the wheelset and brakes worth the extra cash. I can afford it but could upgrade the 1.7 down the road and put the $400 on something different if needed. Thoughts?

Edit: the  Jari 1.5 sits in between at $1300 but has SRAM 1x so I think I want to stick with shimano as I am used to it.

Thanks.

I am looking at building a new gravel rig. My current bike is a Singular Gryphon (think Salsa Vaya), but I want something a little faster, more nimble, and efficient yet still able to tear it up. I have ridden and really like the Salsa Warbird. It is exactly the direction I would like to go. However, I kinda have my heart set on a titanium frame, and if I tear down my current bike I should be able to do this on a budget.

Does anybody have any experience with the Reilly Gradient or with the Vassago TKO? These are my two top choices, and I would love to hear from anyone who is familiar with them. Thanks!

Pinarello GAN GR

Hi All:

This is my first posting in this forum although I've been reading for a while.

In December I got a Pinarello Gan GR gravel bike that I've already ridden over 400 miles on New England (north central MA and southern NH) winter roads, mostly sand and water covered asphalt, and akso some dirt (gravel) roads.

So far I love the bike. The woods have been too inconsistent for MTB'ing or fatbiking, so I relish being able to get out often. I'd never ride my road bike with 23 mm tires in the winter - too risky - but I really feel comfortable on the new bike. My only upgrade so far has been to Clement MSO 36mm tires.

Does anyone else own or have ridden a Gan GR? I'd love to compare notes and see what others think.

Thanks.

Harvey

Looking for a new bike

Hi all, new member here.

I'm looking for a new bike and would love some input.  I'm mainly going to be using it as a commuter (20 miles round trip on paved bike path), and weekend fitness riding (maybe replacing my road bike).  We don't have a ton of gravel roads where I live, so when I go off road, it is pretty hilly and rocky (SoCal).  I would like to do gravel racing in the future, so whatever I get I would like it to do a little of everything, with maybe only a wheel swap.  I commute with a pack, so having spots for racks isn't a high priority.

Two bikes I'm looking at are:
Specialized Diverge Expert and Ibis Hakka MX

I'd love to hear from anyone who has ridden either.  I am open to other bikes, but want to stay in the $3500 price range (approximately).

Thanks!

Salsa warbird overkill?

New member and new to gravel. Great forum. I have a mtb background most recently full suspension. 48 years young btw.Looking for something to do some hard pack dirt roads, some pavement, but not much. Mainly this would be connecting some dirt roads and farm roads . Not looking to race and want a comfortable geometry for 3 hour rides or so. Would like the bike to have room for 40c tires. This will be my first drop bar bike so this riding style is new to me . Originally wanted a steel frame and might still go this way. But....I found a great deal on a carbon warbird. Rival build. Bike fits me great. Seems like comfortable ride position but the bike did seem slightly harsh in the ride quality with the stock 37c tires. Maybe tubeless 40c's feel better? Anyway is this a bike that is to aggressive and race inspired to be comfortable for general riding I have described? Thx!

Hello all, New here. Been using gravel riding for training when its too wet or too hot to ride MTB here in Northeast Texas.

I haven't seen too much mentioned about this bike here, I have one on order. Any feedback about this bike? I wanted a drop bar all arounder. My previous bike I used for gravel was an old On-One inbred that is a size too large, flatbar MTB. This bike checks a lot of boxes for me in particular. Curious as to what others think.
